I’m sure we have all looked on the back of beauty products at the ingredients and wonder what any of them are. A lot of them you can’t even pronounce! So, to help keep chemicals off and out of your skin, look for products with smaller ingredient labels and products that are more natural. Here is a list of the top natural ingredients that you should be looking for! These have been proven to be the most effective to help fight breakouts, calm irritation, treat uneven pigmentation, and help with sun damage. Of course, these are only some of the top natural ingredients as there are tons more.
1) Green Tea Extract
This has high levels of antioxidants that are great for your body and skin! Green tea extract can help prevent and treat sun damage to your skin and it’s also a natural anti-inflammatory which will help soothe your skin. An example of a great product to use is St. Ives Natural Clear Green Tea Cleanser which you can find at any drug or beauty store!
2) Beta Carotene
Beta carotene has many benefits for your skin, especially because it’s full of antioxidants! It’s found in red, orange, and yellow fruits and vegetables like carrots, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes. It helps to protect your skin against sun damage, promotes healthy cell turnover, and also helps to improve skin discoloration. You can find it in products such as Yes to Carrots Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 15 and Burt’s Bees Carrot Nutritive Night Cream.
Colloidal oatmeal has the greatest benefits for your skin AND also has tons of research behind it (all FDA approved). It helps to improve skin irritation caused by eczema, dry skin, insect bites, poison ivy and poison oak. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in oats also help to replenish and maintain the health of your skin’s barrier. You can find it in Aveeno’s Soothing Bath Treatment and Aveeno’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion.
4) Vitamin C
Vitamin C has amazing benefits for your health, hair, and skin! The antioxidants in Vitamin C help fight against free-radical damage, lightens dark spots, maintains oil production, helps to prevent acne, decreases inflammation, and also fights against the signs of aging! Definitely look for this natural ingredient for its powerful antioxidants that will benefit your skin in so many ways. There is a huge list of products that contain Vitamin C, but one of them is a serum called SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic (selling at $146, which is a little pricey for me) but it has been proven to help. A cheaper alternative is TruSkin Serum (under $40).
Soy will help brighten your skin and improve discoloration for a more even tone. Soy-based products are the perfect alternative to prescription-strength ingredients such as hydroquinone and retinoids. Next time you’re in your local drug or beauty store, take a look at Aveeno products for blemishes and skin discoloration which has soy-based ingredients. An example is Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15.
If you have a problem with redness and/or rosacea, definitely look for licorice (or licorice extract) in the ingredient label. Its anti-inflammatory properties help to treat redness while also helping to reduce any uneven pigmentation and help lighten dark under eye circles. You can find it in products such as Eucerin Redness Relief Soothing Night Cream, C. Booth Black Licorice Eye Cream, and Boscia BB Cream with SPF 27.
7) Willow Herb
This is perfect for soothing skin irritations caused by eczema and rosacea. Willow herb is a natural antiseptic, anti-irritant, and antimicrobial all in one! Its antimicrobial properties make it a great natural ingredient for treating breakouts and killing the nasty bacteria that causes acne. You can find it in Boscia Enlivening Amino-AG Eye Treatment and Aubrey Organics Blue Green Algae Soothing Mask.
8) Witch Hazel
Witch hazel is a popular ingredient in toners and moisturizers because it will help control oil while also reducing redness and hydrating your skin. However, make no mistake and do not get the astringent because the alcohol it contains will actually strip your skin of its natural moisture. Witch hazel is in products such as Renee Rouleau Revitalizing Ginseng Toner and Ahava Mineral Body Lotion.
The best thing you can do for your skin? Always wear sunscreen.
