Want to know a secret? I hate to exercise. Even though I know my body needs it, I find no joy in any sort of fitness related activity. I didn’t always have this attitude. I developed it right around the time I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Multiple Sclerosis. This was about eight years ago when exercise resulted in two things: pain and bladder incontinence.
I’ve learned how to make the pain more manageable, but the incontinence, it’s here to stay. Thankfully, there are products I can use to help me adapt. TENA® helps me do the things I love and don’t love (I’m looking at you exercise), without missing out on any moment or experience. I do have a summer bucket list I’d like to complete after all.

Since exercise is a key component to good health, I had to find a way to exercise more without hating it as much. The only solution I came up with was adding in a fun factor. Just like running errands is more fun with a friend, exercise can be more fun with a few modifications.
5 Fun Ways To Fit In Exercise (Even If You Hate Exercise)
→Music + headphones + neighborhood
You know that urge you get whenever you hear the theme song to Rocky? That’s how I feel whenever I listen to my 1980’s playlist on iTunes. If I put on my music, plug in my earphones, and venture around my neighborhood, I can get in at least 30 minutes of activity. Time flies by when you’re jamming out to Duran Duran, Van Halen, or U2.
→Play/Stretch/Yoga + kids or pets
Do you know what kids and pets have in common? They both like to play. I may not have the best form, and I may look totally ridiculous, but yoga is more fun with Garfield. Have dogs? Play fetch. Have kids? Get outdoors and play. Not only are you fitting in exercise but you’re spending quality time with your kids and/or pets. Garfield taught me the downward cat. It’s an easier version of the downward dog. 😉
If you suffer from incontinence and are worried about unexpected leaks during exercise, stop by CVS and pick up a package of TENA® liners, pads, or underwear. For one week only (starting 06/19), CVS and TENA are having a special promotion:
Buy one TENA® product and get one 50% off
Buy two TENA® products and get $2 Extra Bucks in-store.
Note: If you don’t have a CVS store near you, you can order TENA® products on CVS.com.
Now that I don’t have to worry about leaks, and I’ve saved some money, I can continue being me. You know, that quirky blogger gal that loves pets and food and despises exercise. 😉
Sometimes I have to get out-of-town. It may be to a town 30 minutes away or a town 90 minutes away. My favorite place to escape to is Washington D.C. (due north of me).
I have a rule, though. If I drive out-of-town, I have to spend at least 30 minutes walking around looking at one of the local sights. In this case, I can pay my respects to the US Marine Corps at the Iwo Jima/Marine Corps War Memorial and get in a nice brisk walk.
→Visit the local apple orchard/pumpkin patch/strawberry patch/lavender fields/farm
Have you ever picked apples or strawberries? It’s hard work. And great exercise. Any amount of time I spend at a farm or orchard seems to fly by. Before I know it, I’ve worked out every muscle in my body and I usually have a bucket of tasty fruit to take home with me. Sounds like a win-win.
One of the best ways to cool off during the summer months is to head to the beach or pool. It’s also a great place to fit in some exercise. One of the benefits of swimming is that it burns a moderate amount of calories and it’s not hard on the joints. Bring a friend or family member with you and before you know it, you’ll have completed 30+ minutes of exercise.
Whether you’re a fitness newbie or a fitness guru, I’d love to know:
Which one of the above exercise hacks sounds like the most fun to you?
P.S. Always talk to your health-care professional before starting any new exercise routine.
P.S.S. Thanks to TENA® for making a full range of incontinence products that allows me to keep doing what I do. Even if that includes exercise.
