A Thrilling Summer Read: The Breakdown
This is an advertisement for SheSpeaks/St. Martin’s Press.
Last month I had the pleasure of receiving an advanced copy of B.A. Paris’s second novel, The Breakdown. Ms. Paris instantly became one of my favorite authors when I read her debut novel, Behind Closed Doors. If you haven’t read it yet, add it to your summer reading list. It’s a psychological thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat.
When I received The Breakdown, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I read the official plot summary:
If you can’t trust yourself, who can you trust?
Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods, on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, with the woman sitting inside—the woman who was killed. She’s been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It’s a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm. Her husband would be furious if he knew she’d broken her promise not to take that shortcut home. And she probably would only have been hurt herself if she’d stopped.
But since then, she’s been forgetting every little thing: where she left the car, if she took her pills, the alarm code, why she ordered a pram when she doesn’t have a baby.
The only thing she can’t forget is that woman, the woman she might have saved, and the terrible nagging guilt.
Or the silent calls she’s receiving, or the feeling that someone’s watching her…
If you’re guessing that this book is a psychological thriller also, you’re absolutely correct. Cass, the protagonist, descends into a period of what can only be described as madness. The author does a fabulous job of giving the reader a peek into the dark areas of Cass’s mind. The crippling paranoia, and fear that she experiences are easily transferred into the psyche of the reader. As a result, there were periods throughout the book where I had the urge to go lock my windows and ignore my ringing cell phone (points of contention in the book).
The Breakdown had my full attention from the first chapter so I took this book with me everywhere: the pool, the doctor’s office, the backyard patio, the park, etc., As a book lover, I read a lot of books but I normally don’t carry them around with me. With The Breakdown, I was eager to get to the next chapter so I took advantage of whatever spare time I had!
Although The Breakdown doesn’t go on sale until July 18th, you can pre-order it wherever books are sold. If you’re looking for a good summer read, this book is a fabulously thrilling one.
On July 18th at 1 pm EST, She Speaks and St. Martin’s Press will be celebrating the release of the book with a Twitter party. RSVP and you could win a copy of The Breakdown, fun goodies for late night reading, and/or a BIG #TheBreakdown Survival Kit! You’ll also have a chance to interact with the author–B.A. Paris herself! I hope to see you there.
