Welcome to winter & sparrow blog! I’m Kim, the creator of this space on the internet.
I believe that life is best lived when we nourish the mind, body, and soul. In other words, we need to take care of our physical health as well as our mental health. Often times we neglect one or the other instead of working on nourishing both.
What exactly is nourishment?
Nourishment is that which feeds, sustains, or improves our mental and physical well-being.
Examples include:
good food, exercise, time spent in nature, the simple things, family and friends, making time for hobbies, being kind and giving to others, and feeling cozy at home.
Winter & Sparrow’s mission is to help you find your own nourishment so you can nurture your mind, body, and soul right along with us.
Why is our website named winter & sparrow? Have you ever seen a sparrow playing in the snow? While some may simply see cute little birds playing in the snow, I see something different.
I see beautiful feathered creatures bursting with energy, full of joy, playing well with others, and enjoying the moment.
Let’s all aspire to be more like sparrows in the snow, shall we?
About Us
Before I (Kim) started blogging, I was a mental health therapist and counselor for over a decade. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology while working part-time as a single parent.
It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but it’s proof that you and I can do hard things.
During my decade of service, I worked in residential facilities, jails and prisons, domestic violence centers, substance abuse facilities, courthouses, and as an in-home therapist.
I enjoyed my work immensely but in 2008 I decided to retire when Multiple Sclerosis reared its ugly head. It was a dark and depressing time in my life but that’s when I learned about blogging. Blogging became my lifeline, helped me foster a sense of community, and literally became my light at the end of the tunnel.
I had weight loss surgery in June 2017 and losing weight definitely improved my overall health.
Of course, losing weight didn’t cure my Multiple Sclerosis but it sure made a difference in how I feel.
I believe that all of us deserve to feel nourished in mind, body, and soul but like anything worth having, it takes time, practice, and hard work. Just like we work to take care of our bodies, we must also work to take care of our mental health.
It isn’t easy some days but like my dad always used to say, “this too shall pass.”
I currently live in the beautiful Richmond, Virginia area with my husband and three cats. In my spare time, I love creating, taking photos, reading, binge-watching British TV shows, traveling, and scouring the local thrift shops. I have one adult daughter and an almost-six-year-old granddaughter.
