It’s Halloween night and you can feel the excitement in the air. You’ve stocked up on candy for the ghouls and goblins that will be coming to your door.
You’ve got the porch light on and straightened the decorations on the front door.
Suddenly, you hear a knock at the door and you know that trick or treating has begun.
The kids will be delighted when they see you’ve got the “good candy” but they’ll be even more delighted to see that you’ve got the good candy stashed in this cute and original bat candy dish jar.
Skip the boring, cookie-cutter candy dishes that anyone (and everyone) will have and make this cutie instead.
It’s easy to make and inexpensive. My favorite two combinations. 😉
Skip the Store-Bought One! Make This Cute and Original Bat Candy Dish Instead!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 6-inch terracotta pot and saucer (available here)
- black acrylic paint
- sponge or paintbrush
- furniture knob or pull (a cheap one will do)
- two sheets of adhesive-backed black felt
- two sheets of regular black felt
- one sheet of regular purple felt (can also use pink or red instead)
- paper or cardstock for the mouth
- white acrylic paint
- small circular pouncer brush
- red or pink acrylic paint
- black Sharpie
- free fang and wing templates (download available at the end of this post)
- Mod Podge
- Optional: adhesive rhinestones or black ribbon
Wipe the terracotta pot and saucer with a dry cloth. This will remove any dirt or dust.
Using the sponge or paintbrush, coat the entire pot and saucer with the black acrylic paint. Set aside to dry.
Open the free fang template and re-size smaller if needed. Print out a copy.
Cut the template out and then trace onto your white paper or cardstock. Cut the fangs out and position on the pot.
After you’ve determined where you want it, coat the back of the fangs with Mod Podge and secure to the black pot. Smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles.
Pour out a small amount of white acrylic paint into the cap of the bottle. Dip the pouncer brush into the paint and add eyes by dotting the pot with the brush. Don’t worry about making them perfect. You can touch them up later with the black Sharpie.
Add irises (black dots in the eyes) with the black Sharpie pen.
Wash the pouncer brush.
Pour a small amount of red or pink acrylic paint into the cap of the bottle and dip the pouncer brush into the paint. Make cheeks by placing a quick dab onto the pot (one on each side of the fangs).
If your furniture knob isn’t already black, paint it black. Let dry and then superglue it to the center of the lid (the saucer should be turned upside down when you do this since this will become the candy jar lid).
Print out a copy of the bat wing template (resize if needed). Cut the template out and then trace it onto the white side of the black adhesive-backed felt.
Cut out one, flip the template, and cut out another. Repeat this process using the regular black felt. Remove the adhesive backing and attach the corresponding black felt wing. Repeat.
This makes the wings look more polished, while the adhesive blacked felt gives the wings its stiffness so they’ll stand out instead of drooping.
Glue the wings to the back of the pot with the superglue.
As you can see, the glued wings aren’t very pretty where they meet so I’m going to fix this. This step is totally optional but if you’re a tad OCD like I am, you’ll want to cover that ugly bit.
Cut a piece of adhesive-backed rhinestones or black ribbon and attach it to the pot while covering the ugly bit.
See how much better it looks?
To make the bat ears, cut two triangle shapes from your leftover black felt and then cut two smaller triangle shapes from your purple (or pink or red) felt.
Use very small drops of superglue (or felt glue) to attach the purple ears to the larger black ears. Let dry.
Use superglue to attach the ears to the outside lid of the candy jar. Make sure they’re facing the proper way.
Ask me why I need to say this! lol
Let everything dry overnight and then fill with your favorite candy!
If you’re worried about candy falling out of the hole at the bottom of the pot, cut a small circle of felt and glue it over the hole (inside the pot). That’ll solve the problem real quick.
