DIY: Cheap Fall Wreath
Now that my daughter is all grown up and out of the house, I no longer feel obligated to decorate for the holidays. Keyword—obligated. While I enjoy decorating, I frequently remind myself that whatever decoration gets put up/displayed/hung…eventually has to come down. I just don’t have the time or energy for the over the top decorating that I used to do.
To feed my love for decorating {and quiet my over-the-top urges}, I browse through Pinterest and read home tour posts from my favorite bloggers. Debbiedoo’s and The Everyday Home are two of my favorite craft/home bloggers right now. I absolutely love their ideas and both ladies have fun personalities. As long as I can live vicariously through them, I’m good 😉
Now, on to my super-duper easy and cheap Fall wreath. It doesn’t matter what Pinterest is telling you, it is not too late to make your own Fall wreath. Winter doesn’t officially begin until December 21st so don’t feel bad if you’re a late bloomer like me!
What you will need to make your wreath:
- scissors
- a roll of Autumn inspired ribbon
- glue or staple gun
- straw wreath {your choice of size}
- decorations—I used one artificial fall-themed flower spray from Michaels. See below for an example.
- optional—a clear spray sealer
Instructions:
First, I sprayed my straw wreath with the clear sealer and let it dry. If you haven’t worked with straw wreaths before, please know that they can be messy. The sealer helps the straw stay in place and protects it also.
Second, once the sealer is dry, place an end of the ribbon on the back of your wreath and secure with glue or a staple gun. I decided to use a staple gun to attach my ribbon because I knew I would be placing this wreath outdoors and I wanted something that would hold through wind, rain, sleet, or snow!
Third, start wrapping the ribbon around the wreath. Make sure you’re pulling it tightly around the wreath.
When you’re happy with the way the ribbon looks, secure the end of the ribbon to the back of your wreath. I stapled mine to the back but as stated earlier, you can secure it with glue.
Next, determine where you want your fall sprig/spray. I placed mine on the side and stapled it on. Can you tell it’s stapled on? I can’t!
Since I ran out of ribbon, I used twine to hang the wreath. I wanted to make a bow to hang the wreath but with no more ribbon, I had to improvise. 😉
Cost of materials:
- straw wreath—$3.33
- ribbon–$2.99
- autumn spray/sprig–$1.00
- clear sealer–had on hand
- twine–had on hand
- ———>Total cost: $7.32
This sure beats the $30-$40 wreaths I have seen in the stores!
