Make A Nautical-Inspired Vanity Tray + Embrace Your Scars Printable
In April 2014, I wrote a post titled, “The Visible and Invisible Scars of Multiple Sclerosis.” In that post, I lamented about the emotional and physical scars that MS had left on my body. I wrote how I wanted to wear a pair of shorts but I wasn’t ready to show the world all of the scars on my legs.
You see, eight years of daily medical injections created havoc on my skin. I didn’t like the way my legs looked so why should I show them to someone else?
In the two years since I wrote that post, I’ve grown more comfortable in my own skin. I’ve accepted all parts of me…even the imperfect parts. Today, I’m exposing one of MANY scars.
Even though I’ve learned to accept my scars, that doesn’t mean I can’t try to reduce their appearance. A girl’s gotta try her best right?
Say hello to Mederma® Advanced Scar Gel.
When used as recommended, Mederma® Advanced Scar Gel:
- may reduce the appearance of scars
- diminish discoloration and/or
- smooth and soften the texture of scars.
Want noticeable differences in your scar’s appearance in as little as 14 days? Try the Mederma® PM Intensive Overnight Scar Cream. Mederma® PM includes Tripeptol™ which complements the increased nighttime regeneration of your skin. Tripeptol™ contains peptides, collagen, and antioxidants that help your skin fight free radical damage while you sleep. Plus, it’s the first and only nighttime scar treatment.
Apply and sleep. I can handle that.
Since I consider Mederma an investment in myself, I’m determined to use it daily as suggested.
Because out of sight is out of mind, I decided to make a nautical-inspired vanity tray that I could put in clear sight on my dresser. That will be my reminder to apply Mederma before I go to sleep.
The nautical-inspired tray I mentioned? I can’t wait for you to see the finished result!
To make my tray, I started with ten 16″ cedar shims and E6000. I already had shims on hand so that’s what I used {plus they’re cheap}. No shims? You can use any scrap wood.
Next, I glued two shims together. Repeat with the remaining eight.
I let the shims dry overnight and started the fun part—painting!
I decided to use Americana Decor chalk paint in “Treasure” since it’s one of my favorite colors.
Before I applied the wax or antiquing powder, I lined the shims up side by side and glued them together with a hot glue gun. Yep, I switched glues.
I didn’t want the wood to scratch my dresser so I cut and glued two pieces of felt onto the bottom of the tray.
Now it’s time to take a cloth and apply a thin coat of clear wax. I left the wax on and added some antiquing powder to the crevices on the tray. You’re aiming for an aged look, not a rotten wood look so apply sparingly. 😉
Now that we’ve given our tray an aged look, it’s time to add some texture with jute rope. I applied 3 layers of rope starting from the bottom and working upwards. The goal is to cover the edges and make the tray look finished. Use a hot glue gun to secure your rope.
Let her dry and she’s done! This vanity tray matches the colors in my room perfectly. I love that it’s an original creation made by me!
That dented up silver cup belonged to my great-grandmother. It’s proof that something doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful or meaningful.
That black and white card you see? I created it and I’d love for you to have a copy. It says “Embrace your scars for they are part of your story.” TRUTH.

Are you self-conscious about your physical scars? If so, will you try Mederma?
Pin this project for later!
P.S. What do you think of my vanity tray?
P.S.S. I think you should make one for yourself (or for your mom/sister/aunt/grandma). Seriously.
I always have a bottle in my medicine cabinet. I burn my hand on my oven ALL the time – I clearly have not learned my lesson.
I really love the overall feel of the beautiful vanity tray you made. I am big on DIY projects and this looks like one that would be perfect for girl’s night.
I can only imagine that if you don’t accept your scars you will be very depressed. I love the tray and attitude.
Thanks Maria!
What a great little DIY project. You can make it in so many different colours…would be perfect for the cottage.
I’m going to make a white one next. 🙂
I need to try this out … I just had bariatric surgery and have 6 lovely scars on my stomach. If i ever want to wear a bikini – which i don’t I have that kangaroo pouch from having kids I better check it out. No really I want the scars to away a reminder of what Ive been thru.
What a great tray, I love the color and the creativity! Mederma is a great product, and now it has a great new use! I am saving this project for a future date! Thank you
Your vanity tray turned out wonderfully! Guess who happens to have wood shims on hand…this girl! I’ve been using Mederma on my scar from Tommy John surgery and love the results, too! #client
Wood shims are my new DIY staple 😉 I’m so glad to hear that Mederma is helping. It’s helping me too! Thanks for stopping by!
