Small Space Transformation: A Cozy French Farmhouse Inspired Bedroom
Small Space Transformation: A Cozy French Farmhouse Inspired Bedroom
I know exactly when things went haywire.
I had a bad fibromyalgia flare at the end of winter and it knocked me out of commission for two weeks.
Then my husband got sick and he shared his germs with me. He recovered after a few days but I did not. I struggled with bronchitis for the better part of a month which exacerbated my “usual” medical conditions. Because illness is the gift that keeps on giving, I could handle little more than sleep, eat, drink, repeat.
When Spring finally appeared, I started to feel human again but alas, my house was a disaster.
Here’s the state my bedroom was in:
It looks like a sick person’s bedroom, right?!
It definitely serves as proof that bloggers are human and life interferes with things like crafts, house cleaning, laundry, brushing one’s teeth, and Pinterest-worthy rooms.
Thankfully, my good friends at Soft Surroundings sent me their gorgeous French Market Quilt to feature here on Winter and Sparrow. It served as the primary inspiration for the cozy, minimal French farmhouse style I wanted in the bedroom.
And it was the motivation I needed to get my house back in order.
After I repainted the walls, I made the Let’s Stay Home sign using wood, stain, paint, and a stencil. It adds just the right amount of rustic and farmhouse.
A set of crisp white cotton sheets always makes a bed look neat and clean and the French Market shams (in natural) added a farmhouse vibe.

You guys, aren’t they gorgeous? They’re beyond soft too! I can’t say enough about the quality either. These are sturdy, well-made shams and the attention to detail is amazing. From the ties to the button closure to the ticking stripe on the reverse side, it’s all very ooh la la without feeling frivolous and over the top.
Here’s a close-up of the texture on the French Market quilt:
I promise you that it’s worth every penny.
Instead of buying a new nightstand, I repainted the old one, added a French-inspired plaque and pull, and boosted my storage space with a set of hyacinth baskets. A girl needs to keep her treasures close by. 😉
As much as I loved my upcycled shabby chic lamp and shade, I wanted to add something a bit more modern so I went with a black task lamp (which is perfect for book readers by the way). I’ve been spotting more and more task lamps in French-inspired room makeovers and I love how they mix with the farmhouse aesthetic.
A few months ago I spotted these succulent dishes in the Target dollar spot aisle and I grabbed one of each. I keep one on my nightstand, one on my dresser, and one in the bathroom. They’re perfect for jewelry, lost buttons, coins, etc., and how can you go wrong with succulents?!
There’s not a lot of room on the left side of the bed so I kept it fairly simple. I used a photo display ledge as a mini nightstand and a storage crate turned sideways serves as storage space.
The architectural wall piece may look familiar as I featured two of these ornate beauties in my entryway makeover. Since they’re sold in a set of three, you can use one by itself or display them all (see Resource List at the end of this post).
I’ve been obsessed with faux olive stems lately. I’m slowly replacing the cotton stems in my house with them because the greenery makes all the rooms pop.
For those of you who have asked about the display wall, here’s what it currently looks like:
Since I can see these shelves while lying in bed, I often switch out the items to match seasons or holidays. No matter what time of year it is though, you’ll always find old books and something silver. It’s one of my favorite pairings.
Now, if you have an eye for detail, you’ve already noticed that there’s no headboard. Yep, no headboard. I’m still deciding if I want to add one or not. The room isn’t that large and I feel like a headboard will only make the room look smaller. What do you guys think? Leave me your suggestions + feedback in the comments section.
Let’s take a look at what the room used to look like:

Love it ! But I personally feel every bed needs a headboard. We didn’t have much room for one but found a linen look fabric covered one at a local Target like dept store for not too much $. It takes up very little space but when you are not feeling well and in bed gives you a much cozier feel plus just that finished touch. It also gives you something to lean against when sitting up in bed enjoying your morning cup! All the best.
I’m inspired! I love everything about this look? I would love the name of the paint color you used on your walls!
Thanks so much, Kat! The color is called “Creamy” from Sherwin Williams. We also use their “Aged White” which is very similar. I love how calming it makes the room look.
How freaking adorable is this? I love the neutrals. Such a transformation! Definitely giving me inspo for when I move next month.
I love the French Market shams, the olives, and the art over the bed. It is very clean, crisp, and calming. Great job.
TY so much, Tiffany!
My husband laughs because I cannot sleep in an unmade bed, even if I’ve been sick I have to make it before I get back in it. The change in the shelves to a warmer color really pops with the color of the quilt.
I can totally relate Val! Now that my bedroom is looking all pretty, I make my bed every single day.
I love it! How cute!! Now you’re inspiring me to redecorate mine!
