Stovetop Potpourri: How To Make Your Home Smell Like Christmas
If the sights, sounds, and smells of Christmas make you feel happy, you’re going to love today’s post.
It’s no secret that the smell of your favorite candle, fresh bread, or warm chocolate chip cookies makes you feel happy and cozy but did you know that there’s a reason behind that?
Odors…affect people’s mood…and behavior in a variety of ways but it isn’t because odors work on us like a drug, instead we work on them through our experiences with them. That is, in order for an odor to elicit any sort of response in you, you have to first learn to associate it with some event. This explanation for how odors affect us is based on what is known as associative learning, the process by which one event or item comes to be linked to another because of an individual’s past experiences. To put that in English, if your memories associated with a specific scent and event are positive, you will associate that scent with positive feelings.
Since many of us have memories of Christmas where there was an abundance of scents like pine trees, cookies, cozy fires, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, etc., those scents trigger positive memories which in turn, make us feel happy.
Now I don’t know about you, but I could use some more happy.
2020 has been a dumpster fire of a year and I’ve been doing my best to cope with the worry and anxiety that this pandemic has created.
I’ve reprinted my worry journal at least three times in the past two months alone.
I’ve been doing 5-5-5 breathing on the daily and making sure to get outdoors and get fresh air and exercise.
The other tool that I’ve added to my regimen to help me feel happier and less stressed?
This awesome stovetop potpourri.
The house has smelled like Christmas every single day for the past week and even my husband has remarked how good it smells.
