There are so many natural foods and ingredients that benefit your skin in endless ways! (So much better than spending hundreds of dollars on spa/facial treatments or products when you can get the same results at home, right?!) Homemade face masks are perfect because they contain natural ingredients, no side effects (unless you’re allergic to what you added in), they extremely benefit your skin, fix/help your annoying skin problems, no chemicals or preservatives, no artificial fragrances or detergents, and the list goes on!! It’s pure goodness going right onto your skin! Now, who wouldn’t want that??
First, here are some great ingredients to include if you want to create your own:
-If you have OILY skin, try using mashed papayas or strawberries on your skin to keep it oil-free and help even out your complexion.
-If you have SENSITIVE skin, try using one mashed banana on your skin or include it in one of these recipes below. Using bananas will help heal blemishes and leave your face soft and moisturized.
-Another great ingredient for SENSITIVE skin is oatmeal (steel-cut or old-fashioned), which can be used in a scrub or a mask.
-Plain Greek yogurt is great for ALL SKIN TYPES. It helps to keep your skin moisturized, smooth, and healthy. It also helps to get rid of dead skin cells, clear out pores, and fight off blemishes. Apply it your face till dry and wash it off.
-Honey is also great for ALL SKIN TYPES, especially DRY. It benefits the skin by maintaining moisture and elasticity.
More ingredients with healthy benefits for your skin (some are included in the face mask recipes below):
Avocados, papaya, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, almond oil, grapes, lemon juice, turmeric, honey, cucumbers, bananas, pineapples, sugar, olive oil, and citrus fruit such as oranges.
Always apply these masks to clean skin. If you have sensitive skin, don’t keep the mask on as long so no irritation occurs (10-15 minutes for example), and if you have more of a normal skin type then keep the mask on for 20-30 minutes. After washing your face off with water, apply a moisturizer.
9 More Easy Homemade Face Mask Recipes
1) Mud Face Mask
No this mask doesn’t contain mud! But the cocoa powder gives it its “muddy” appearance. This recipe will make enough for about 3-5 face masks so it would be perfect to do with your girl friends or a few coworkers after a rough day at work to help relax. You will need: 1 teaspoon of honey, lemon juice, buttermilk, and cocoa powder, ½ of a banana, and 2-3 tablespoons of Greek yogurt. However, if you have excessively dry or damaged skin, reduce the amount of lemon juice or do not include it. Instead, just use the same amount of honey to take its place. Now on the other hand, if you have oily skin like I do, use less honey and more lemon juice. Mix all ingredients together thoroughly in a blender or bowl. It should have a thick consistency. Apply a layer of the mixture to your face for about 20-30 minutes. Wash off with cool water.
*The cocoa powder helps to rejuvenate the skin to leave it soft and glowing. The lemon juice is great for exfoliating the skin, reducing oil, and helping to reduce the appearance of scars, uneven pigmentation, and age spots. The benefits of buttermilk are similar to the Greek yogurt because it helps to soften, brighten, and exfoliate the skin. This is an all-around beneficial face mask that I definitely recommend trying!
2) Pineapple and Papaya Face Mask
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS MASK FOR SENSITIVE SKIN.
You will need: 1 cup of fresh pineapple, 1 tablespoon of honey (optional), and ½ of fresh papaya (be sure to peel it and remove the seeds; also can use an unripe papaya). Mash the pineapple and papaya together in a bowl or put them in a blender/juicer. Then strain out the pulp. Add the honey if you chose to use it. Make sure your skin is clean and then apply the mixture to your face. It might sting/tingle a little bit so try not to scratch! It works best to apply the mixture using a cotton ball. Leave it on for only 10-15 minutes and then rinse off with warm water. I definitely recommend using a moisturizer afterwards. Only use this mask 1-2 times per week!
The papaya contains natural alpha-hydroxy acids and papain which help to dissolve and remove dead skin cells. Pineapples contain an enzyme called bromelian which also helps to remove dead skin cells and reduce age spots and wrinkles. These two are the perfect combination to naturally exfoliate your skin and lighten skin color/uneven pigmentation!
3) Turmeric Face Mask
Turmeric has so many beauty benefits! Its high level of antioxidants helps to reduce cell damage, exfoliates the skin, reduces pigmentation and evens out skin tone, brightens skin, improves skin texture, helps fight wrinkles, AND helps with skin conditions that cause inflammation (acne, eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, etc.). In other words… it’s amazing! Lol.
You will need: 1 teaspoon of turmeric, ½-1 teaspoon of honey, 3 tablespoons of Greek yogurt, and 2 tablespoons of flour (regular flour, rice flour, or ground oats). Mix all of these ingredients together thoroughly so that it makes a paste. Apply a THIN layer to your face and leave it on for about 20 minutes, or until dry. Rinse it off in the shower with gentle pressure. So your skin doesn’t dry out, apply moisturizer afterwards.
*Definitely put only a thin layer on your face; that’s all you need and it will reduce any chances of staining. Wash your face again after showering or rinse off multiple times. Any slight staining that you do see (on your hands for example from applying it) should come off pretty easily so don’t worry! 🙂
4) Clay and Yogurt Face Mask
This recipe makes enough for two people. You will need: ¼ cup of plain Greek yogurt, 1 teaspoon of green clay face mask powder (can be found in any natural food stores like Whole Foods or even a craft store), and 1 teaspoon of honey. Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl and then apply it to your face. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes and then rinse off with cool/lukewarm water.
5) Orange Face Mask
This mask is great for moisturizing, cleansing, fighting breakouts, and exfoliating your skin. You will need: 2 tablespoons of honey, 3 tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt, the juice from 1 whole orange, ½ cup of steel-cut or old-fashioned oatmeal, and 2 teaspoons of dried orange peel which you can find in the spice isle of your local grocery store if you don’t have any at home.
Put all ingredients into a small bowl and stir until thoroughly mixed. It should be a thick consistency. If it’s too thin or “runny” then add extra oatmeal or honey. Apply it evenly over your face and leave it on for 20-30 minutes. Rinse off thoroughly with warm water.
6) Avocado Face Mask
This is another mask that is great for moisturizing your skin. You will need: 1 egg white, 1 ripe avocado, and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Mix all of these ingredients together (use a whisk to get rid of any clumps). Apply it evenly over your face and leave it on for about 30 minutes, or until dry. Rinse off thoroughly with warm water.
7) Kiwi Face Mask
This face mask will help brighten your skin for a glowing complexion. You will need: 3 tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt, 1 tablespoon of almond/olive oil, 1 tablespoon of fresh orange juice, and 2 whole kiwis. First begin by peeling the skin off of the kiwis and then puree them in the blender. Add in the rest of the ingredients and blend until it has a creamy texture. Apply the mixture to your face and leave it on for about 20 minutes, or until dry. Rinse off thoroughly. *You might feel a slight tingling sensation from the kiwi seeds but its okay! That just means it working to exfoliate your skin and take off all of the unwanted dirt and dead skin cells!
8) Lemon and Cucumber Brightening Face Mask
For this you will need: 2 whole lemons and 1 whole cucumber (peeled). Juice the lemons and mash/mix it in with the cucumber. If it helps, cut up the cucumber and put it in the blender. Apply to your face or just areas where you have dark pigmentation. Leave it on for about 30 minutes then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. This mask helps to repair skin damage, treat fine lines, even out pigmentation, and promote healthy skin cell growth.
9) Nutmeg and Honey Face Mask
Using 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of nutmeg; mix together thoroughly. It should have a thick paste consistency. Apply the mask to your face (the amount is up to you) and leave it on for about 30 minutes. Then scrub softly in circular motions while washing it off with warm water. This will exfoliate your face, removing any loose dead skin cells! Once the mask is completely rinsed off, be sure to put moisturizer on your face.
Nutmeg and honey are natural anti-inflammatories and will help reduce any redness, soothe your skin, and prevent infection. Cinnamon and the nutmeg as well will work to exfoliate your skin (when you scrub in circular motions to wash it off).
NOTE: Leftover masks can last up to one week in the refrigerator in an airtight container unless otherwise stated.
