Easy to Make: DIY Nautical Wreath
DIY Nautical Wreath
Sometimes a girl needs a little nautical inspiration in her life. Now that the frigid temps of winter have disappeared, spring fever has started to turn into summer fever.
The month of June always reminds me of the joy I felt as a child whenever I heard the phrase, “school’s out for the summer.” My summer vacations of yesteryear were spent playing on the sandy beaches in Florida, swimming in the pool in my neighborhood, eating barbecue with my friends, riding my bike everywhere, making s’mores, and venturing to Florida theme parks. If we were lucky, my family got to spend the day on a boat out at sea…exploring the local islands and parks.
This DIY Nautical Wreath reminds me of where I come from, what I did, and who I did it with. Sometimes a girl needs a little nautical inspiration in her life to remind her that it’s okay to play like a kid again.
Materials
- wreath form
- rope
- 3 types of ribbon {4 are pictured but I only used 3}
- hot glue gun and glue
- scissors
- nautical shape {I used an anchor–scroll down for photos}
- white paint
- paint brush
Instructions
Glue one end of the ribbon to the wreath form. Once it’s secure, start wrapping your ribbon around the wreath form. Overlap the ribbon as shown in the picture below.
You can use one ribbon style for the entire wreath or you can split in half as I did. I opted to use a red polka dot ribbon on one side and blue polka dot ribbon on the other side. Each ribbon spool was 4 yards in length and I used them all on my 10″ wreath form.
Once you’ve covered the wreath in ribbon, it’s time to prepare your nautical piece. My nautical piece is a wood anchor I found at Michael’s. I painted it white with DecoArt’s multi-surface paint {color: cottonball}.
I painted both sides of the anchor cause I’m funny like that 😉 Once the anchor is dry, cut a 12-inch piece of rope and hot glue one end to the back of the anchor. Wrap the rope around the anchor and tie a knot at the top.
Next, I hot glued the anchor to the wreath form.
While the glue was drying, I made two embellishments. The first is a rosette made from the 3rd ribbon spool and the second is simply a circle made from the rope. Those were hot glued onto the wreath form also.
Since I wanted to hang the wreath on my door, I cut 2 feet of rope, looped it on the wreath and experimented with a knot at the top.
I then hung it on my front door all the while cursing the drab color of the said door. I rent so I can’t change the color. 🙁
Here’s a close-up shot of the knot at the top:
And we’re done! Time to grab a drink, grab a chair, and relax….Admire the nautical inspiration we just created.
Kimberly, I love this wreath! It’s so funny, this is actually the first year I have felt really nautical for some reason. I was never drawn to this type of décor, despite growing up near the beach. I think I’m feeling homesick for the shores now that I’ve been living in the desert for several years. I’ve been so drawn to all things nautical lately! I love the anchor shape & the rope. Kim, I just nominated you for a Liebster Award! Please stop by my blog, today’s post, to see your nomination and (hopefully) accept the award. You are one of the wonderful blogger’s I’ve met through BlogPaws that I admire the most! Can’t wait to see you in Nashville!
